Because He Humbled Himself

In category:

A Man Bowing Down

There was once a wicked king who deliberately chose to do evil. He practiced sorcery, divination and witchcraft. He consulted mediums and spiritists. He worshiped the stars instead of God who made them. He built shrines and erected altars to pagan gods. He also desecrated God’s Temple in Jerusalem by installing a carved image of one of his own gods in it. He even went so far as to burn up some of his own sons as sacrifices to his gods.

Godly Living = Persecution?

In category:

A Burned-Out House

We tend to think that someone who lives a moral and righteous life will have less trouble and problems than those who ignore or actively oppose God’s standards. We also tend to think that those who are going through trouble are being punished by God or are under God’s curse. In some cases we may be correct to think this way.

On the other hand, we all know of wicked people who are prosperous and seem to have no troubles at all. And uprightness is no guarantee of a trouble-free life. We have seen righteous and godly people who are forced to endure all kinds of trouble and affliction. The Holy Scriptures go far as to say, “ In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,” (2 Timothy 3:12 NIV)

Taken Away

In category:

Home Destroyed By Flood

Why do we become angry when something in our possession is taken away or is destroyed? Usually it is because we view the things in our possession as belonging to us. They are ours. Therefore, when we lose the use of them we consider it as harm done to ourselves.

But do we really own anything? What do we have that we can truly say we have created from nothing and, therefore, is ours exclusively? We might say, “It is mine because I bought it with my hard-earned money!” Or we might say, “This book is mine because I wrote it!” All this is is true. Yet, in reality the ability to earn money to purchase things and the mind to create things does not come from within ourselves, but from God. Everything we have, ultimately comes from the One who gave it to us. The Apostle Paul asks an important question, “...What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?” (1 Corinthians 4:7 NIV)

Win The Argument Or Win The Person?

In category:

Men Hugging

Most of us have strong opinions about “how things ought to be!” When life arranges itself according to our understanding of what is good and proper it gives us a feeling of security and well-being. We like it when our jobs are going smoothly, we have no money worries, our families are in good health, the weather is clement and the politicians are making decisions which benefit us. The problem is that not everyone agrees with our ideas of how things should be!

The truth is that we don’t all like the same things. One person considers a certain house charming and a delight to live in while someone else thinks it looks hideous and is poorly designed. Some people enjoy the rain while others become depressed when the sun isn’t shining. Some delight in the quiet countryside while others feel ill-at-ease away from the frenzied concrete jungle of the city. Some like their food heavily spiced while others prefer it bland.

Helping

In category:

An Offering of Flour

Do you ever wish that you could help more? We live during a time when it seems that there are more needs than ever. Rarely does a week pass when we do not hear about a fresh disaster which causes hardship. People are driven from their homes by earthquake, fire or flood. An economic downturn destroys jobs or famine stalks the land.

Freedom

In category:

Shackles for Sale

How many of us are truly free? Personal freedom is something most people claim to value. They will go further and say that they are free. “Certainly,” they say, “I’m nobody’s slave!” Yet, the fact of the matter is that most people are not free. Even those who claim they can do whatever they like, whenever they want are most likely ruled by their own passions and desires. They have habits they cannot break. They have patterns of thought they cannot escape. They allow the opinions of others to control them. Their bonds may be invisible but they are just as captive as if they were shackled with chains of iron.

No More Tears

In category:

Man Crying

Two people face the same set of circumstances. One quickly succumbs, gives way to despair and dies. The other refuses to give way to seemingly unsurmountable odds, holds on and survives. What makes the difference? Why does one person survive while the other doesn’t? People who have researched this question say that one of the most important factors is hope. The people who survive horrible circumstances can see beyond the present. They know that their situation will not last. Even if things become worse in the immediate future relief will inevitably come. Things will get better. They can visualize a brighter tomorrow.

I Hear You!

Listening

Our ears are a wonderful blessing to us. They enable us to enjoy the sounds of children laughing, birds singing and the rush of a mountain stream. With them we listen to soul-uplifting music and the melodious chant of the poet. Our ears also provide warning. They let us know about an onrushing train before we see it. They let us perceive the wail of an ambulance siren and the hiss of a snake before it strikes. Our ears also play an essential role in communication. Our telephones would not be nearly so useful if we did not have ears.

Indecision

In category:

Plowing

Have you ever felt impatient with someone because they can’t make up their mind? All the facts they need are before them. They have listened to all the arguments for and against. They have discussed the matter until there is nothing more to say – yet they can’t bring themselves to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’! Sometimes it seems that the more trivial the issue, the more time it takes to make a decision.

Alone!

In category:

Alone

One of the most frightening punishments that can be afflicted on anyone is to place him in solitary confinement. He is shut up all by himself. There is no one to talk to, no one to laugh with, no one to share his hopes, burdens or ideas with. He is left alone with his own thoughts and his own conscience. Those who are left for a long time in solitary confinement, with no interaction with other people, quite often go insane.
