Romans

The Apostle Paul’s letter to the Christians in Rome provides the most systematic explanation we have in the New Testament of the process of salvation. It shows us why we are alienated from God, what God did to restore our relationship with Him, and what we must do to receive pardon and enter into a covenant relationship with Him. Paul’s letter can not only help those of other faiths understand God’s will for their lives, it can reaffirm Christians in their faith. We can know with certainty that God loves us and that our sins have been forgiven.

  • Introduction to Paul’s Letter to the Romans - Most of the books in the New Testament are inspired letters written to a person or church to address a specific situation or problem. A question would arise about a particular issue and the church would ask an Apostle to clarify the matter. For example, the church at Corinth had some questions regarding marriage, food … Continue reading
  • Called to Belong to Jesus Christ (Romans 1:1-6) - We pay attention to what someone tells us only if we believe that he knows what he is talking about. To put it another way, we don’t listen to people whom we believe are ignorant about the subject under discussion. For example, if someone who has no experience in building tries to tell us how … Continue reading
  • The Power of God (Romans 1:7-17) - When we think about God’s power, we usually call to mind things like His ability to speak the universe into existence. Or perhaps we call to mind God’s ability to raise the dead and to judge all mankind. But there are other aspects of God’s power which have a direct bearing on our lives. The … Continue reading
  • Without Excuse (Romans 1:18-32) - The theme of the Apostle Paul’s inspired letter to the followers of Christ at Rome is that, “…the gospel is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes…” (Romans 1:16 NIV) However, this raises a question. Why do we need to be saved? And, from what do we need to be saved? … Continue reading
  • According To What He Has Done (Romans 2:1-11) - In his inspired letter to the church at Rome, the Apostle Paul addresses the question of why we need salvation. He points out that people have deliberately turned away from God. They have suppressed the truth, embraced idolatry and, as a result, have fallen prey to all sorts of evil practices. They have no excuse … Continue reading
  • Written On Their Hearts (Romans 2:12-16) - There is a principle which says that, “Ignorance of the law is no excuse.” Suppose a man is arrested for cutting down a tree in a public park, for firewood. Will the judge let him off if he says, “I’m sorry your Honor, but I did not know it was against the law to cut … Continue reading
  • Knowing and Doing (Romans 2:17-29) - Probably almost everyone who believes in God would agree that He is not only the Creator, but the Judge. Some day, He will right all wrongs and end all the injustice we see and experience in this world. Some day, everyone will answer for what he or she has done. However, this raises a question. … Continue reading
  • God Is True (Romans 3:1-8) - How can we human beings know God? How can we who are sinners have a relationship with God who is holy, righteous and just? Jews would reply that the answer to these questions is the Law of Moses. God entered into a covenant relationship with the Jewish people. Because of the Law they became God’s … Continue reading
  • No One Is Righteous (Romans 3:9-20) - As people, each one of us is uniquely different from everyone else. We have our individual likes and dislikes. We have our own ways of thinking. We do things differently than others do. We have different talents and abilities. We have different physical characteristics. Some of us are tall, others short. We have different colors … Continue reading
  • To Demonstrate His Justice (Romans 3:21-31) - What makes us right with God? Why should God be pleased with us? Most people would answer these questions by pointing to their good deeds. They have God’s favor because their good deeds outweigh any wrong they might have done. Jewish people would answer that they are pleasing to God because they have the Law … Continue reading
  • Credited As Righteous (Romans 4:1-12) - It is difficult to change one’s beliefs. The longer a person has held a particular belief, the harder it is to give it up. Perhaps one of the most difficult beliefs to change is the idea that we can please God and rescue ourselves from the consequences of sin by our own efforts. Our pride … Continue reading
  • The Promise Comes By Faith (Romans 4:13-25) - When God created man, He not only made him in His own likeness, He also gave him free will. We humans have the right to choose whether we will live according to God’s standards or not. Unfortunately, we have all chosen to do our will rather than God’s will. We have sinned and our sin … Continue reading
  • At Just The Right Time (Romans 5:1-11) - God loves us. Even though we have alienated and separated ourselves from Him by our sin, He still cares for us. Since it is impossible for us to wipe away the effects of sin through our own efforts God made a way. Jesus Christ took our guilt upon Himself and paid our debt through His … Continue reading
  • Through One Man (Romans 5:12-19) - Regardless of whether we are rich or poor, whether we are highly educated or have no schooling at all, no matter where we live or whatever our background and culture happens to be, we all have one thing in common: we die. How did death come into the world? The Bible records how it happened. … Continue reading
  • We Died To Sin (Romans 5:20-6:7) - We have a tendency to think that if something is good, more is better. However, this often is not true. For example, if taking medicine cures you of an illness it does not mean that a larger dose will be even more beneficial. On the contrary, a larger dose might kill you. Likewise, we need … Continue reading
  • Alive To God (Romans 6:8-17) - Many people have a negative view of religion, and Christianity in particular, because they think of it in terms of prohibitions. In their minds, religions consist of a list of rules which prevent them from doing what they want to do. It is true that the followers of Christ will refrain from doing many things. … Continue reading
  • Slaves To Righteousness (Romans 6:17-23) - Scripture tells us that God is good. Yet, we need only look around us to see that evil is everywhere. If God is good, then why is there so much evil? Not only is evil very prevalent, it often seems like it is increasing and getting worse in character. Why does a good, all-powerful God … Continue reading
  • A New Way of Service (Romans 7:1-6) - Most people agree that the way to please God is to live a holy and blameless life. They are right. However, the problem we face is that we are not holy and blameless. All of us have violated God’s standards and become sinners. In this way, God’s Law which was supposed to direct us and … Continue reading
  • Sin Killed Me (Romans 7:7-13) - Most people would probably agree that newborn babies are innocent. They have done nothing wrong or bad. In the same way, most would agree that small children are also innocent though they do things which we would never accept or tolerate from adults. Why do we consider young children innocent even though they misbehave? It … Continue reading
  • Nothing Good Lives In Me (Romans 7:14-25) - Slavery has been part of the story of mankind for most of recorded history. It seems that all peoples and all cultures have, at one time or another, practiced slavery. Even today, when most countries have outlawed the practice, many thousands of people are sold into bondage each year. Many thousands of others are kept … Continue reading
  • No Condemnation (Romans 8:1-8) - From time to time there is a miscarriage of justice. An innocent person is convicted of a crime and sent to prison for something he didn’t do. We quite rightly become angry when we hear about cases like this. Such things ought not to happen. They are an affront to our concept of what is … Continue reading
  • Sons of God (Romans 8:9-17) - Children often look like their parents. For example, a daughter looks the same as her mother did at the same age. She has the same dimple in her chin. Her smile is the same. Her nose has the same shape. Sometimes these physical resemblances hold true for several generations. There is also another way in … Continue reading
  • Glorious Freedom (Romans 8:18-27) - We usually do not like to wait. If we have a need, we want that need to be met now – not at some future date. For example, if we are hungry, we want to eat now, not next week. The longer it takes for our meal to be prepared, the more impatient we become. … Continue reading
  • More Than Conquerors (Romans 8:28-39) - There are great benefits to belonging to Christ. For example, He frees us from our slavery to sin. God also promises the followers of Christ that they will share in Christ’s glory. Unfortunately, there is also a cost to following Christ. If we wish to share in Christ’s glory, we must also be willing to … Continue reading
  • God’s Purpose (Romans 9:1-18) - One of the messages of the Apostle Paul’s inspired letter to the church at Rome is that there is nothing which can separate the followers of Christ from God’s love. No matter what the situation is; whatever dangers or persecution they may have to face, there is nothing in all of heaven or earth which … Continue reading
  • The Riches of His Glory (Romans 9:19-26) - Inequality is an undeniable fact of life. Some people have much, others have little. Some have the opportunity to receive a good education while others do not. Some enjoy good health, others are crippled or suffer chronic illnesses. Some people live in areas of the world which enjoy peace, while others face social unrest, terrorism … Continue reading
  • A Righteousness That Is By Faith (Romans 9:27-10:4) - When a painter paints a picture the paint does not have any right to say what kind of picture he should paint. When a potter forms a utensil the clay does not have any say in what kind of pot it ought to be. Further, the painter and the potter can destroy their work if … Continue reading
  • The Word Is Near You (Romans 10:5-13) - There is a saying that, “Ignorance gets us into trouble and pride keeps us there.” The reason pride often prevents us from escaping the situation we are in is that we don’t like to admit that we are wrong. We don’t like to confess that we have made a mistake. In the Old Testament there … Continue reading
  • Good News (Romans 10:14-21) - Businesspeople face a two-part problem. First, they must provide a product or service which others are willing to buy. Secondly, they must let others know that the product or service is available. For example, suppose someone starts a restaurant. His kitchen may be spotlessly clean. He may use only the finest ingredients in his dishes. … Continue reading
  • A Remnant Chosen By Grace (Romans 11:1-10) - We humans have the tendency to let the principle of “collective guilt” influence our actions. For example, if a foreign government does something we don’t like, we will insult or harass a person from that country even though he had nothing whatever to do with the incident, has no influence over the policy of his … Continue reading
  • Riches For The Gentiles (Romans 11:11-24) - It is probably true that almost all people live with a sense of failure. Very few of us are able to accomplish everything we would like to do. Even the things we do accomplish rarely reach the level of perfection we would like. In a more profound sense, we fail to reach our full potential. … Continue reading
  • Mercy On Them All (Romans 11:25-36) - We enjoy stories in which the characters overcome seemingly impossible odds. They face a situation which threatens to overwhelm them or destroy them and there is no way out. Then, when hope is almost gone, the consequences of a choice made much earlier change the situation and provide a solution. We like to read about … Continue reading
  • Living Sacrifices (Romans 12:1-8) - The theme of the first 11 chapters of the Apostle Paul’s inspired letter to the followers of Christ at Rome is God’s mercy in granting salvation to sinners. Without God’s mercy, all of us would perish because we fall short of God’s expectations and standards. This raises a question. How should we respond to the … Continue reading
  • Cling To What Is Good (Romans 12:9-21) - The Gospel – that is the death, burial and resurrection of Christ – should have a profound effect on our lives. Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf is the strongest expression of God’s love for us and of His mercy. Because God has shown us His love and mercy, we also ought to show love and … Continue reading
  • Governing Authorities (Romans 13:1-7) - We serve a God who is loving, kind and merciful. The Old Testament writers repeatedly assure us that He does not treat us as our sins deserve. We see this most clearly in the fact that God sent Jesus Christ to redeem us from our sin. Jesus takes the penalty for sin upon Himself for … Continue reading
  • The Fulfillment of the Law (Romans 13:8-14) - Most human activities tend to become more complex over time. For example, think of a sport or a game. In the beginning the rules were quite simple: Move the ball forward until you can pass it through the goalposts. But as situations arose which the inventors did not anticipate, they added more rules. Each circumstance … Continue reading
  • Disputable Matters (Romans 14:1-12) - The Apostle Paul teaches us that if we love one another we will not need rules and regulations to restrain our actions. To the followers of Christ in Rome he writes, “Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” (Romans 13:10 NIV) However, this still leaves us with … Continue reading
  • Acting In Love (Romans 14:13-23) - Jesus said that the world would be able to recognize who His followers are by their love. “A new commandment I give you: Love one another. • For Our Neighbor’s Good (Romans 15:1-4) - People come from many different backgrounds and cultures. Our customs, practices and ways of thinking are different. • A Spirit of Unity (Romans 15:5-13) - All of us are different. We come from different families, backgrounds, experiences, traditions and cultures. • An Acceptable Offering (Romans 15:14-22) - The world tries to tell the followers of Christ that they are evil, ignorant and incompetent to teach anyone about God. • Sharing (Romans 15:23-33) - Before ascending to heaven Jesus Christ gave His disciples a command. He said, “…All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. • Greeting (Romans 16:1-16) - When we speak of the church we often refer to it as an institution. For example, we will say things like, “The church teaches…” However, we should never forget that the church is composed of individuals who have submitted themselves to Jesus Christ. In light of this, it is no wonder that the Apostle Paul … Continue reading
  • Obedient To The Faith (Romans 16:17-27) - One of Jesus’ most fervent wishes was that all of His followers would be united. Just a few hours before His crucifixion He prayed. After asking God to protect His disciples He said, “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all … Continue reading
